Choose the Perfect Size for Your Furry Friend
To make sure this open mesh bandana fits your pet comfortably without sliding off, you need to measure their neck circumference where their collar usually sits. Here is a quick reference guide to help you estimate the size:
- Size S (Cats & Toy Breeds – up to 4 kg / 9 lbs): Ideal for kittens, adult cats, Chihuahuas, or Yorkies. Start with a foundation chain of about 20-25 cm.
- Size M (Small to Medium Dogs – 5 to 10 kg / 11 to 22 lbs): Perfect for Shih Tzus, Pugs, Jack Russells, or a 7 kg puppy. Start with a foundation chain of about 30-35 cm.
- Size L (Large Dogs – 12 kg+ / 26 lbs+): Designed for French Bulldogs, Beagles, or Labradors. Start with a foundation chain of 40 cm or more.
NOTE: Always Measure Your Pet First! While this size chart is a great starting point, every furry friend is shaped a little differently—even within the same breed or weight category! To guarantee the absolute perfect, most comfortable fit, I highly recommend grabbing a soft measuring tape and checking your dog or cat’s actual neck circumference right where their collar usually sits. When in doubt, it is always better to customize the length of your foundation chain based on your pet’s real-life measurements.
Instructions
Start by making a slip knot and making a foundation chain equal to your dog’s neck circumference.

Row 1 & 2:
Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch). Work half double crochet (hdc) in each stitch across for both rows. Turn your work at the end of each round.

Row 3
Chain 4 (counts as your first half double crochet plus a chain-2 space). Skip the first 2 stitches, and in the 4th stitch, work a half double crochet (hdc). [Chain 3, skip the next 2 stitches, and work a half double crochet (hdc) in the following stitch]. Repeat the sequence inside the brackets across the row to create your open mesh grid. Turn.
Rows 4 – 13 (The Decrease Section)
Turn your work. For all consecutive rows up to Row 13, you will repeat this exact decrease sequence at the beginning and the end of each row to gradually shape the bandana into a perfect triangle:
- To Start Each Row: Chain 5. Work a half double crochet 2 together (hdc2tog) over the first two chain-3 spaces to decrease. (To do this: Yarn over, insert your hook into the first chain space, and pull up a loop. Immediately insert your hook into the next chain space and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on your hook). Chain 3.

- The Middle: Continue working 1 half double crochet (hdc) followed by a chain 3 into each remaining chain space across the row.
- To End Each Row: When you reach the last two chain spaces of the row, repeat the same decrease method (hdc2tog) over them to taper the final edge. Turn.
