The best part? You only cut the yarn once, and the colors you aren’t using get hidden inside your stitches as you go. That means almost no weaving in ends!

Before You Start: How to Carry Your Yarn

This pattern uses a simple tapestry crochet technique. Don’t be intimidated, it’s easier than it sounds! Instead of cutting the yarn every time you change color, you let the unused color rest along the top of the stitches and crochet over it. Your stitches cover the yarn, so it stays hidden and you don’t have to weave in extra ends.

To change color, work the last step of the stitch before the change (the final yarn over and pull through) with the new color. This keeps your color changes clean and your tree edges sharp.

Christmas Tree Coaster Pattern

Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), then work 12 dc into the ring: 10 in white and 2 in green. Join with a sl st. (12 sts)

You can now cut the white yarn, since you won’t need it again. Leave the red and green yarn attached and keep carrying them as you go.

Round 2: Work 2 dc in each stitch around, keeping the green stitches growing into 4 green, and the rest in red. Join. (24 sts: 4 green, 20 red)

Round 3: 1 dc, inc around, with the green section growing to 6 green stitches and the rest in red. Join. (36 sts)

Round 3 white, red and green yarn double crochet 3.0 mm crochet hook

Round 4: 2 dc, inc around, with the green section growing to 8 green stitches and the rest in red. Join. (48 sts)

Round 5: 3 dc, inc around, with the green section growing to 10 green stitches and the rest in red. Join. (60 sts)

Finish round

Fasten off and weave in your remaining ends. Block lightly if needed to help your coaster lie flat.

The secret to the tree shape: the green stitches increase in each round just like the red ones do. That steady growth turns your green stitches into a triangle, a perfect little Christmas tree pointing up to the white star.

Tips for the Best Results

  • Keep your tension consistent. Carrying yarn can tighten your work, so relax your grip a little.
  • Don’t pull the carried yarn too tight, or your coaster will pucker.
  • Stack your colors in the same position each round so your tree stays straight.
  • Use acrylic yarn for a durable, easy-care coaster that holds its shape.

Make a Whole Set

Make four or six of these and tie them with a ribbon for an adorable handmade Christmas gift. They also work as ornaments, mug rugs, or holiday table decor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What yarn is best for a crochet coaster?
Acrylic yarn works great because it’s durable, easy to wash, and comes in bright holiday colors. Cotton is also a good option if you want extra absorbency.

Is this pattern good for beginners?
Yes! If you know how to make a magic ring and a double crochet, you can make this coaster.

How big is the finished coaster?
About 11 cm (4.3 in) in diameter, which is a good size for a standard mug or glass.

Do I need to weave in lots of ends?
No. Because you carry the red and green yarn, you only cut the white after round 1.
